NOTE: «For the remission of sins» appears four times in the Word of God.

QUESTION: What is meant by the phrase «For The Remission Of Sins?»

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Luke 3:3 And he (John) came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins:

Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Romans 3:25-26 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, at this time, his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus.

Exodus 34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

NOTE: Neither one sinner nor one sin in the Old Testament was cleared even though they were forgiven.

Hebrew 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

NOTE: Sinners in the Old Testament had none of their sins (NOT ONE) taken away even though they were forgiven.

Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

NOTE: Romans 3:25 declares Christ’s righteousness for the Old Testament saints. Before the Cross of Christ, when they did what He asked them to do, the Lord put up with those sinners (FORbearance), until such a time when the one, perfect, effectual sacrifice was made.

Romans 3:26 To declare, at this time, his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus.

NOTE: Romans 3:26 declares Christ’s righteousness for the New Testament saints. Then at this time His righteousness was applied to all those forgiven sinners and their sins were REMOVED and CLEARED forever.

The statement, «for the remission of sins» means the sins of the past had already been forgiven and were now REMOVED and CLEARED.

Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Hebrews 9:14-15 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 9:16 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 1:13-14 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

NOTE: The blood atonement of Christ is a complete redemption not just the forgiveness of sin.

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Luke 3:3 And he (John) came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

NOTE: John’s Baptism was UNTO REPENTANCE (getting right as a nation) NOT UNTO SALVATION. The KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was about to be ushered in and the people, as a nation, had to get their hearts right.

God had forgiven Israel, her period of probation was over, and the Messiah was on His way! In view of this Israel must prove that she is repenting and go under the water! (many didn’t)

Through hundreds of years God had been «forgiving sins and iniquities» that could «by no means CLEAR the guilty.» These sins «that were past» had to be CLEARED and REDEEMED (Hebrews 9:15). Christ states that in view of this fact His blood was going to be shed. God had to have a basis for forgiving sin, and the blood of bulls and goats was an incomplete basis for they could not «TAKE AWAY SINS» (Hebrews 10:4)

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

ANSWER: Jesus Christ, the spotless, sinless Lamb of God, was going to TAKE AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD. The sins were to be CLEARED and totally TAKEN AWAY, which the blood of bulls and goats could not.
